Position Description
This reference position is part of team of professional librarians in the Research & Scholarship department, and reports to the Associate Director for Research & Scholarship (ARS). The principal duties of this position are providing reference and instructional service to our faculty and students. The librarian would also provide leadership and expertise on supporting and promoting scholarly output.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Serving as a member of the Law Library’s general reference team. As such, the candidate is expected to:
- Provide high-caliber legal reference service to Law School faculty and students.
- Serve as a library liaison and provide proactive and personalized library services for faculty, including complex research, research assistant training, and the tracking of faculty scholarship.
- Assist in the staffing of the in-person and virtual reference desk, a task that will entail some evening and weekend hours.
- Author and update research guides, bibliographies, and other types of instructional material.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Serving as the Scholarly Services Librarian, the candidate is expected to:
- Identify opportunities and investigate best practices to support the research and publication of NYU Law faculty and collaborate with the ARS in developing library resources and initiatives to support Law School scholarship.
- Conduct regular assessments of faculty service and make recommendations to ARS to ensure consistent, prompt, and high-quality services and support.
- Provide expertise on the promotion of discoverability, preservation, and visibility of Law School scholarship. As such, answer patron questions, make recommendations on library practices, monitor advances in open-access publication, digital repositories and related areas, and communicate trends and developments to the other members of the library.
- Compile a faculty publications bibliography on a quarterly basis. Supervise the updating and maintenance of faculty publication webpages.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of faculty members’ scholarly profiles.
- Providing support to the Law School’s student-run journals, including serving as a point of contact for reference assistance for cite-checking, coordinating creation of perma.cc accounts and ILL services, and providing or coordinating research training.
Classification
This is a non-tenure track faculty (Assistant Librarian of Practice) position, and after the first year is eligible for multi-year contracts.

Requirements
Required Qualifications
- M.L.S. & J.D. (or equivalents).
- Experience providing in-depth and complex legal research and reference support.
- Knowledge/expertise in copyright, open access publishing, and/or scholarly communications issues and related tools in academic libraries.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1-3 years of academic library experience.
- Fluency with new and emerging digital data and scholarly communications technology.
- Some experience with copyright issues and open-access publishing
